Writing tips and guidelines:
Most of us are writers in some form or fashion. Sometimes we all need a little help getting started. So, the editorial office has put together helpful hints to help you put your story onto paper.
Focus:
Remember, your essay is part of a book that gives people instruction, hope, and motivation. It’s alright to tell your story, but make sure you give it significance.
- What does your story demonstrate to others?
- What was your life like before you “woke up?”
- What types of feelings and things did you struggle with?
- Why should it give them hope?
- What is life like now?
- How are you different?
- How have you influenced others?
- Why should they take new energy from reading it? (You can leave that decision to the reader, but it often helps if you can suggest the significance of your narrative.)
Ask yourself: "What do I want the reader to do?" Answer the question, and then, keep that thought uppermost in your mind as you write. Your message should inspire, direct, inform or otherwise enable the reader to do something which you want them to do, believe, know or become. If you don't want anything from them, why should they read your essay?
Style:
If you write in an honest, personal voice, you’ll write well. Don’t try to impose a "bookish" vocabulary or tone onto your writing. You are unique and the fact that you’ve been asked to submit a selection to one of the best selling "Wake Up . . . Live the Life You Love" books means that you have something to say. Just say it, and you’ll be fine. Please avoid writing a commercial for your business instead of a story or a lesson.
Length:
Your submission needs to be under 1,200 words. It is best if you keep it around 1,000 words.
Format:
Make sure you send your submission in Word Format (.doc) or a Rich Text Format (rtf).
